How Much Does Fence Staining Cost?
Estimate wood fence staining cost per linear foot — with the free calculator and what affects the price.
Staining protects a wood fence from weather and makes it look sharp. The cost depends on the stain type, fence length and prep work. This guide covers the cost per linear foot and a calculator.
THE SHORT ANSWER
The short answer
Painting or staining a fence costs $2–$14 per linear foot or $0.50–$2.50 per sq ft. Power washing plus staining runs $3.50–$17 per linear ft.
Cost by stain type
Transparent stain is cheapest at $1-$2 per sq ft. Semi-transparent runs $2-$3. Solid stain and paint cost the most at $3-$6 because they need more coats and hide the grain.
- Transparent stain: $1–$2 per sq ft
- Semi-transparent: $2–$3 per sq ft
- Solid stain / paint: $3–$6 per sq ft
- Power wash + stain: $3.50–$17 per linear ft
Why stain a fence
Untreated wood grays, cracks and rots fast. Stain seals the wood, blocks UV and water, and lasts 3-5 years. It's far cheaper than replacing boards.
What affects the price
Prep is the hidden cost — dirty or gray wood needs power washing and drying (24-48 hours). Both sides of the fence double the work. Hard-to-reach runs and tall panels add labor.
