Central AC runs $5,000–$10,000 installed, heat pumps $5,500–$12,000, and furnaces $3,000–$7,000. Ductwork adds $2,000–$5,000. A full system replacement runs $8,000–$15,000.
System types and costs
Heat pumps are the fastest-growing choice because they heat and cool. Central AC is cheaper if you already have a furnace. Gas furnaces are cheaper to run where gas is available. Efficiency ratings (SEER, HSPF, AFUE) raise the price.
