Replacing interior doors refreshes the whole house — sound control, privacy and style. The price depends on door type, frame condition and labor. This guide covers the installed cost and a calculator.
THE SHORT ANSWER
The short answer
Interior door installation runs $200–$400 per door including labor and materials. Solid-core doors cost more but block sound; pocket doors need wall framing. A typical house with 6–10 doors costs $1,500–$4,000.
Door types and prices
Hollow-core doors are the budget standard at $50-$100. Solid-core doors cost $100-$300 and block sound much better. Prehung units include the frame, which makes installation cleaner. Sliding and pocket doors run $200-$800 plus framing.
- Hollow-core: $50–$100
- Solid-core: $100–$300
- Prehung with frame: $80–$350
- Pocket/sliding: $200–$800
- Installation per door: $150–$300
Frame condition matters
If the existing frame is square and sound, a prehung door drops in quickly. Old houses often have out-of-square jambs that need shimming and reworking, which adds $50-$150 per door. Plan for it when you budget.
DIY vs pro install
Hanging a prehung door is doable for a confident DIYer — it takes a day for the first door. A pro does it in 1-2 hours with better hinge alignment and weatherstripping. For multiple doors, a pro is usually worth the speed.
