How to Estimate Garage Drywall

Contractor method for estimating board, labor and finishing for garage walls.

Garage drywall is a clean board-plus-labor calculation once you know the total wall and ceiling area. Waste and the finish level decide how much the number moves.

THE SHORT ANSWER

How do you estimate garage drywall?

Measure wall and ceiling area, add material waste, then price board, hanging and finishing separately. At the defaults, 800 sq ft with 10% waste totals $792 board + $960 hanging + $640 tape and texture = $2,392.

01

Measure the surfaces

Add the wall and ceiling area you need to cover. Garages often leave the ceiling open, so confirm whether it is in scope.

02

Add the waste factor

Cutouts for doors, windows and outlets plus offcuts add waste. Ten percent is a reasonable default.

03

Separate board from labor

Board price covers the material on the extra area; labor covers hanging and screwing on the finished area. Finishing smooth instead of texture adds a rate.

  • Board material
  • Hanging and screwing
  • Tape and texture
  • Smooth finish premium

Total and validate

880 sq ft of board at $0.90 is $792, 800 sq ft of hanging at $1.20 is $960, and tape and texture at $0.80 is $640, for $2,392. Use the Garage Drywall Cost Calculator.
