How to Estimate a Retaining Wall

Contractor method for estimating retaining walls: length, height, material, base and drainage.

Retaining walls fail two ways: under-priced excavation and missing drainage. The block is cheap; the ground and the water are where bids go wrong.

How do you estimate a retaining wall?

Measure length × height for wall area, choose material ($10-$25/sq ft), price excavation, gravel base and drainage, then add reinforcement above 4 ft. A 40 ft × 3 ft block wall runs $3,500-$6,000.

Measure length and height

Walk the slope and measure the exposed face. Wall area = length × height. Most residential walls run 20-60 ft long and 2-4 ft tall.

Choose the material

Concrete blocks run $10-$14/sq ft, stone $18-$25/sq ft, timber $12-$15/sq ft. The material choice changes the labor too — stone is slower to set.

Price excavation, base and drainage

Excavation difficulty drives the bid: rocky soil adds 30%. A compacted gravel base and a drainage pipe behind the wall are not optional — they are the difference between a wall that lasts and a wall that falls.

Check reinforcement and the total
