THE MATH

Paint quantity formula

Quantity = (area × coats) ÷ coverage

Multiply the area by the number of coats then divide by the paint coverage (usually ~350 sq ft/gal per coat).

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

500 sq ft, 2 coats, coverage 350 sq ft/gal

Area to cover = 500 × 2 = 1,000 sq ft. Quantity = 1,000 ÷ 350 = 2.86 gal.
