THE MATH
Roofing materials formula
Squares = area ÷ 100; bundles = squares × bundles per square × (1 + waste%)A roofing square is 100 square feet. The total bundles are rounded up so you order enough to cover cuts, valleys and waste.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
A 2,200 sq ft roof
A 2,200 sq ft roof is 22 squares. At 3 bundles per square plus 10% waste, you order about 73 bundles. At $38 per bundle, the material cost is about $2,774.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many bundles come in a square?

Is waste always added?
Yes, there is almost always cut waste at hips, valleys and edges. A 10% allowance is a common starting point.
