The short answer
Drywall finishing runs $0.50–$1.00 per sq ft for taping and mudding, or $1.00–$2.50 per sq ft with sanding and a Level 4 paint-ready finish. A standard room costs $300–$800 in finishing labor.
What finishing includes
Finishing means embedding tape over the joints, applying two to three coats of joint compound, sanding smooth and touching up. The finish level determines the price: Level 3 is texture-ready, Level 4 is standard for paint, Level 5 is for critical lighting or gloss paint.
- Tape + mud (Level 3): $0.55–$1.60 per sq ft
- Level 4 (paint-ready): $1.05–$2.65 per sq ft
- Level 5 (critical): $1.50–$3 per sq ft

Why it costs what it costs
Finishing is slow, skilled work. Each mud coat needs drying time — 24 hours or more — so a job spans several days even if the actual working time is short. Texture removal or a full skim coat adds significant labor.
Finishing vs hanging
Hanging drywall (screwing sheets to the studs) costs $0.50-$1.50 per sq ft. Finishing costs about the same or more. On many jobs, finishing is 50-60% of the total drywall bill — don't budget only for the hang.
