THE MATH

Change order price formula

Price = (direct cost) × (1 + markup) × (1 + contingency)

Direct cost combines materials and labor. Markup pays the company and contingency covers surprises. Both are applied in cascade.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

$1,500 base, 12 h × $55, 20% markup, 10% contingency

Direct = 1,500 + 660 = $2,160. Price = 2,160 × 1.20 × 1.10 = $2,851.
