HOW TO USE IT
How to use the Solar EV Charging Calculator
- 1
Enter your daily driving distance in miles.
- 2
Set the EV efficiency in kWh/mile.
- 3
Add sun hours and panel wattage.
- 4
Review the number of panels needed.
THE MATH
Solar EV charging formula
Panels = daily energy ÷ production per panelThe EV's daily energy is divided by each panel's production (W ÷ 1000 × sun hours × 0.8).
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
40 mi/day, 0.30 kWh/mi, 4.5 sun hours, 400 W panels
Energy = 40 × 0.30 = 12 kWh/day. Panel production = 0.4 × 4.5 × 0.8 = 1.44 kWh. Panels = 12 ÷ 1.44 = 9 panels.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many panels to charge an EV?
