ATTIC VENTILATION

How Much Does Attic Ventilation Cost?

Estimate attic ventilation cost — vents, fans and installation — with the free calculator.

Good attic ventilation protects the roof, insulation and your cooling bill. The price depends on the vent type, count and whether you need passive or powered units. This guide covers the costs and a calculator.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The short answer

Vents run $15–$150 each and powered fans $150–$500; installation adds $100–$300 per unit. Most homes need $300–$1,500 of attic ventilation work. The rule is 1 sq ft of vent per 300 sq ft of attic.

01

Vent types and costs

Soffit and ridge vents are passive and cheap; gable vents work with cross-flow; turbines spin with rising heat; powered fans move the most air. Passive vents last forever; powered fans cost more but help in hot climates.

  • Soffit/ridge vents: $15–$60 each
  • Gable vents: $50–$150 each
  • Turbines: $100–$300 each
  • Powered fans: $150–$500 each
02

The 1-in-300 rule

The standard is 1 sq ft of net free vent area per 300 sq ft of attic floor, split between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or gable). Too little ventilation traps heat and moisture; too much can reduce roof durability in some climates.

03

Installation and labor

Installation adds $100-$300 per unit. Roof-mounted units need a roofer to keep the flashing watertight; soffit and gable vents are simpler. Combination with insulation work is common — do both together.
