HOW TO USE IT

How to use the Insulation Cost Calculator

  1. 1

Measure the area to insulate in square feet.

  2. 2

Choose the target R-value (R-30 to R-60 is common).

  3. 3

Enter the material price per sq ft and review the installed total.

THE MATH

Insulation cost formula

Total cost = area × material price + area × labor

Fiberglass batt insulation typically runs $0.60–$1.50 per sq ft for material depending on R-value. Basic install labor adds roughly $0.50–$1.00 per sq ft.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

500 sq ft attic at R-38

500 sq ft × $1.20/sq ft material + 500 × $0.50 labor = $850.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What R-value do I need?

Attics: R-38 to R-60 in most U.S. climates. Walls: R-13 to R-21.

Batt or blown-in?

Batts are cheaper and DIY-friendly; blown-in fills gaps better and is faster to install in attics.

Is there a tax credit?

The U.S. federal energy credit (25C) can cover up to 30% of qualifying insulation materials, capped per year.
