HOW TO USE IT
How to use the Asphalt Tonnage Calculator
- 1
Enter length and width in feet.
- 2
Enter the finished compacted depth in inches.
- 3
Add a waste allowance.
- 4
Review area, compacted volume and tons required.
THE MATH
Asphalt tonnage formula
Tons = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2,000 × (1 + waste)The estimate uses a planning density of 145 lb/cu ft for compacted hot mix. Confirm the job-mix density with the asphalt plant before ordering.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
40 ft × 15 ft, 3 in compacted, 5% waste
Volume = 150 cu ft. Base = 10.88 tons. With 5% waste ≈ 11.42 tons.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What asphalt density should I use?
145 lb/cu ft is a planning value; use the plant's job-mix density for ordering.
Is the depth compacted?
Yes. Enter the final thickness after compaction.
How much waste should I add?
Five percent suits regular layouts; increase it for irregular edges and difficult access.
