THE MATH

Excavation cost formula

Total = volume × rate × access + hauling

Digging runs ~$90/cu yd in moderate soil, $50 in loose and $175 in rocky soil. Difficult access adds up to 35%. Hauling is estimated at ~$15/cu yd.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

500 sq ft × 2 ft deep, moderate soil, moderate access, hauling

Volume = 37.04 cu yd. Digging = 37.04 × $90 × 1.15 = $3,833. Hauling = 37.04 × $15 = $556. Total ≈ $4,389.
