THE MATH
Flooring installation cost formula
Total = effective area × (material + labor) + removal + underlayment + stairs + transitionsEffective area adds cut waste (5-15%). LVP runs ~$4/sq ft, laminate ~$3/sq ft, hardwood ~$9/sq ft, engineered ~$7/sq ft. Labor adds $1.80-$3.50/sq ft.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
500 sq ft of LVP, 10% waste, underlayment included
Effective area = 500 × 1.10 = 550 sq ft. Materials = $2,200. Labor = $900. Underlayment = $600. Five transitions = $100. Total = $3,800.
