HOW TO USE IT
How to use the Mulch & Rock Coverage Calculator
- 1
Measure the bed area in square feet.
- 2
Choose the coverage depth (3 in is typical).
- 3
Enter the price per cubic yard delivered and review the volume and cost.
THE MATH
Coverage formula
Volume (yd³) = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324A cubic yard of mulch covers about 108 sq ft at 3 in deep, or 54 sq ft at 6 in. Decorative rock is heavier and covers less area per yard.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
A 200 sq ft bed at 3 in
200 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 324 = 1.85 yd³. At $35/yd³, the mulch costs about $65, or 25 bags (2 cu ft each).
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much mulch do I need for 1,000 sq ft?
At 3 in deep, about 9.3 cubic yards. At 6 in, 18.5 cubic yards.
Should I buy bulk or bags?
Bulk is usually 30–50% cheaper per yard; bags are easier to move and good for small beds.
How many 2-cu-ft bags per yard?
13.5 bags of 2 cu ft make 1 cubic yard.
